Head On Design collaborates with local artist Sharon Boonzaier to create unique hand-painted animal heads

A recent stroke of genius resulted in a very special collaboration between Joanna and artist Sharon Boonzaier of Sharon B Design. Both share a studio space in Cape Town, a shop at the V&A Waterfront, as well as a deep love of the natural world. Together they have launched a limited range of hand painted sculptural animal heads. Each piece of each kudu or elephant head is delicately hand painted by Sharon in ink and gold leaf. Each head is inspired by themes of South Africa’s natural and historical heritage, including the African Jungle, a Baobab Elephant Woodland and the Dutch-Asian Delft depicting the Cape’s indigenous fynbos and wildlife. No one piece is the same and each unique head is an artwork to behold.

Gold leaf is used throughout the range and depicts a strong historical connection that South Africa holds with this precious mineral.

We understand that travellers cannot easily take large items back home with them. Therefore we flat-pack each sculpture with great care, using white gloves, which we supply in the box, along with clear simple instructions so that the heads can easily be reassembled by their new owner.

Please note that Sharon paints each head inspired by a theme yet no 2 sculptures will ever look exactly alike. When you order one of these special pieces, you may receive the one in the photo if it is not yet sold, or Sharon will create a new one for you using the same theme and colour scheme, incorporating slightly different patterns, forms and subject matter to create a unique sculpture piece.

Here are pics of another bespoke project, a functional elephant stand in Birch Wood designed to hold a notebook, also painted by Sharon. Price on request. Please email jo@headondesign.co.za
